Always Expect a Train – See Tracks? Think Train! Key Messages to Remember and Share

Operation Lifesaver  educates about rail safety and emphasizes:                                           “We know that injuries and fatalities that occur at highway-rail crossings or on railroad property are a real, but often preventable, problem. Few people realize that in America, a person or vehicle is hit by a train roughly every three hours, and that’s a reality we’re determined to change.”

Ranking number one in trespassing incidents on railroad tracks,  California’s trespass deaths rose from 68  in 2013 to 101 deaths in 2014.   Trespassing is not only illegal, it can be deadly. Our rail grade crossing numbers dropped in 2014, but even with that decline we still rank number two in these incidents in the United States.

These are numbers we are trying to change; through free presentations, rail safety events, targeted web videos, media campaigns and more, California Operation Lifesaver is working hard to promote rail safety throughout California.

We have key rail safety messages and slogans that provide rail safety education messaging. Here are some of those messages and slogans:

  • Always Expect A Train! -Trains don’t run on a schedule and train time is Anytime! Be aware a train can come from either direction at any time.
  • Stay Off, Stay Away, Stay Alive! – Train tracks are private property and walking on train tracks is trespassing and illegal.  If you STAY OFF and STAY AWAY from train tracks, you will STAY ALIVE!
  • Look, Listen, and LIVE! – Always be aware of your surroundings and don’t be distracted. Distractions can be deadly, so be aware and if you LOOK and LISTEN for a train you will LIVE!
  • See Tracks? Think Train! – Remember this key message!                                    Whenever you See Tracks? ALWAYS Think Train!

Help us change these trespass and grade crossing incident statistics!  Remember these rail safety messages and share them with your friends and families to help you make good decisions and stay safe when you are near railroad tracks:

Operation Lifesaver’s mission is to end collisions, deaths and injuries at highway-rail grade crossings and along railroad rights of way. A national network of trained volunteers provides free presentations on rail safety.
