California is filled with busy rail corridors and active communities. We lead the nation with the highest number of fatalities in both trespass and grade crossing incidents. In 2009, the California State Legislature proclaimed and presented the September Rail Safety Month proclamation to California Operation Lifesaver and its Safety Partners. The Legislature’s recognition provides crucial support to our rail safety mission to provide education and raise awareness that can change dangerous behaviors near tracks and trains that can save lives.

No one can do it alone. It takes all of us working together to impact change.

Each year, California Operation Lifesaver participates in Rail Safety Week, a collaborative effort with Operation Lifesaver, Inc, Rail Safety Partners across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Together we can #STOPTrackTragedies. The Stop Track Tragedies campaign shows the impact that rail-related incidents have on families and communities. Check out the Rail Safety Week Themes.
Pick any day in September to wear RED with your group. (During Rail Safety Week on Friday 9/22 be sure to wear red to support our #STOPTrackTragedies message.)

We encourage California citizens to become active rail safety advocates in their communities by sharing rail safety tips with their loved ones. We ask them to help save lives and share the message with five of their family and friends, and then ask those 5 to tell 5 and so on… This is how our Save Lives Tell 5 campaign began. Community engagement increases rail safety awareness which can help us eliminate dangerous grade crossing and trespassing behaviors.
#SaveLivesTell5
California Operation Lifesaver is an independent non-profit rail safety education and awareness program dedicated to ending collisions, fatalities and injuries at highway-rail grade crossings and on railroad rights-of-way in the State of California.
